A Change of Seasons

Back when the band was working on Images and Words there were a couple of older songs from the Majesty era that the band planned to put on the album, namely I'm talking about To Live Forever and A change of Seasons. Both were cut from the album, however after a few live performances of the 23 minute epic ACoS, fans demanded that the band release this amazing song.

The result is the 5-track EP "A Change of Seasons" Longer in legnth than Images, it's called an EP anyway to avoid it being confused with their next full legnth release. Working on the Monsters of Rock Label this time, DT gives us something that is not quite an EP, not quite a live album, but is every bit worthy of our attentions. Including the title track, which is without any doubt in my mind Dream Theater's best song, and several live cuts from the band's "uncovered" show doing covers of the bands that they like the best, A change of Seasons has something for any kind of Dream Theater fan.

The title track is an amazingly introspective piece of work, lyrically and musically sound, with all five members of Dream Theater, including new keyboardist Derek Sherinian in perfect fusion. the song combines almost prog jam session style instrumentals with some of the best songwriting DT has done.

As for the cover songs, the band does "Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" by Elton John, "Perfect Strangers" by Deep Purple, a medley of three Led Zep tunes, "The Rover", "Achilles Last Stand" and "The Song Remains the Same". Finally is a 10 minute medley that combines Pink Floyd, Dixie Dregs, Journey, Queen, Kansas and Genesis. Every cover is played flawlessly and LaBrie's rendition of the vocals spot on. In short, ACoS is aa disc that no DT fan should be without.
